DbF, The Battle of the Broken Rule.

We had a swiftly put together game of DBFantasy a while ago, using our own DBx rules. It was such a bright day, which made a change, that a lot of the photos didn't come out, so these are the better ones, honestly!
We had the usual +1 for elite, pikes etc, -1 for Peasants and also bonus for the Good side being within 6" of The Good Church, and for the Evil side being within 6" of The Bad Rocks & The Flaming Tower of Evil. Keeps it simple eh! TSS boards & terrain, Kallistra 10mm figures were used.
My dog was not at all interested..

The table, showing the Tower, Church etc, and also the now obligatory refreshments taken whilst gaming. Meat & potato I think they were. Note the two Rulers on the table, one metal and one merely plastic.

The Evil types advance, given Bonus by the well painted Tower, which started life as a mere candlestick holder, bought for 50p at a BB sale.

The Chaps of Haligor advanced to the fray also, with a shout of,"Bring it on if you think you're bad enough".

Some Barbarian Rhino Chariots, which were on neither side, but just picked on the nearest unit, looting as they went. That nearby shed got emptied by them.
The two sides mix it in the centre, near The Good Church, giving the Good side the edge to win after a time.
Those Chariots piled into the flank, and did a fair bit of riding down, hacking & slashing, pulling wheelies and such like. Note The Broken Ruler. Done in by an over enthusiastic gamer. It was at least 15 years old, and was considered a family heirloom. Now, just another gaming casualty. So very sad.
In the centre, the melee grew, and lots of casualties were caused on each side.

The flanking chariots had a disastrous effect on the Evil side, as did the continuous rain of arrows from the "keeping well out the way" Elven archers.
After a long struggle, both sides were forced to retire, and reform their lines, with not as many chaps as there was before. The Evils tried a mounted attack, which the Spearmen just about held off, awaiting reinforcements...
... from a large column of Elf Pikes, solidly stomping it's way toward them.
Unable to wait for the solidly stomping but slow moving Pikes, our brave spearmen flanked and attacked the Mounted Evils, selling their lives dearly, in a desperate effort to hold their ground. It all got very mixed up & messy, blood & guts all over the table.
But they caused enough casualties to halt the Evil attack, and the stomping Elves finally arrived, and thoroughly trashed the remnants right off the table.

A good game was had, despite the much loved rulers sad demise, and we were able to add to our DBF rules, resulting in a half decent play sheet.

Fantasy Game, Defence of the Bell..

We got our Kallistra figures out and gave them a dusting off, for a general bash about, Humans and Elves defending (or trying to!) The Bell Ale House, The Windmill, Manor House and The Church. (Oh, and The Woodshed..) Capturing these would gain points for the Forces of Evil, made up of Orcs and Undead, who needed to also retain 'The Awful Ruins'.
For the buildings, we used our collection of 'Lilliput Lane' type models...not historically accurate, but well..when your using Elves and Orcs and Skeletons....
We used our house rules version of the DBn system, giving bonus to Spears, Zombies, and Elves.
The Bell Ale House, with the local peasantry hanging around it..

..whilst the disciplined Elven Spears form up to fight off the Orc hordes..

Over on the Right, having retired beforehand and given up the Windmill, the Humans make a stand against the Undead, inspired by supporting calls from the Ladies of the Woodshed, seen here nestling under the trees.

In front of the Bell, battle is joined with Horse and Chariots against Wolves and supporting Orcs.

Whilst on the Right, the brave Human Chariots give it a go against the Undead...bad move really, and they were just showing off to those aforementioned Ladies..

The melee on the Left continued, with lots of hacking and slashing from both sides, the Evils opening out to Flank the Elven Horse..

As the rigid Evlen Spears looked on unfazed, the Peasants began to realize that their Ale House was under threat, and moved up in boisterous mood..

On the Right, the Human Chariots held their own for a while, before being overwhelmed by Rhino Chariots joining in...(chariots pulled by Rhinos eh...you couldn't make it up could you)..

The Evils did get a bonus in this melee, as they had Wolves with teeth and Rhino's with horns against mere softy Horses..

Buoyed up by the success of their chariots, the Skeletons piled into the Humans, who resolutely defended The Ladies Woodshed...apart from one or two who couldn't resist the Ladies Wail, and left the ranks to enter the shed, fearing it may be their last opportunity for a while..
Whilst back at The Bell, the Elves more than held their own against the Orcs.
Bit of a disaster on the Right, as the Evil Chariots pile into the Human Spears, causing mass trampling and carnage.
The Elves began to get the upper hand, and flanked the Orcs, pushing then back.

And on the Right, the Evils massacred the remaining Humans, securing both the Windmill and Manor House, as well as the Ladies Woodshed..what happened in there is not really printable here..
Following the desecration of the Shed...which is now known as 'The Shed of Dread', the Evils quickly made their way across the field toward The Bell and The Church. Luckily, the Elves had just about stomped the Orcs into the ground, and seeing that the Ale House was about to be Rhino'd, the Peasants, fuelled up on the local brew, formed up for a ruck..
and actually took the charge! Must have been a good brew that they had..

As they fought it out, the Elves returned, and joining the fray, flanked the Rhino's...
..and fought off a flanking Skeleton Chariot too..
The Peasants lost heavily but fended off the attack, inspiring the Bell Landlord to declare 'drinks all round'..
It was an enjoyable fun game, with several 'special rules' put in, like some Humans being unable resist the Woodshed Ladies wailing and so leaving the ranks, whilst the Humans got a Bonus for defending near to The Church and Pub, thus being inspired by 'Belief and Brew'.
Overall, it was an Evil win, having taken the Windmill, Manor House and Woodshed, as well as retaining the 'Awful Ruins', which the Humans never even got near to.
Congratulations to the Evil Duo, Richie and Tod, and thanks to Alex for some inspired thoughts on the Woodshed.

DBF, The Villagers Revenge.

Following last weeks trashing and pillaging of their village, the Humans decided to dish out a portion of revenge, so they made their way to the Evil's castle, and formed up outside.

After a short period of taunting and verbal abuse, the Evil Army came out and formed up opposite, ready for battle. The Armies were broadly similar to the last game, but the zombies were absent, having wandered off far away.

The Evils kicked off with a general advance, and an attempt at a flanking move by the Large Orcs, supported by Chief Evil. These Orcs, being on the big side, would count as +1 in combat. The rest of the two armies edged toward each other, with the cavalry meeting on the flank.

While the Elf Spearmen poked and shunted their way through the sword wielding Orcs to great effect, the Human swords just about held the skeletons off to the right. The Orc cavalry wiped the floor with the Elf cavalry due to superior numbers and flank attack by the Large Orcs, supported by Chief Evil.

Meanwhile, the Spearmen and swords had done rather well and had taken out three bases of Orcs over two moves...just one to go and revenge would be theirs.

And so it was! A swift flanking move by a column of Spears against an Orc element produced the result. The battle was won, and the Evils ran off back to their castle, feeling suitably humbled. The Human army, flush with success and few casualties, marched off home.

We played this game with the same rule amendments to DBN as below, Kallistra figures and TSS terrain.

DBF, Attack on the Village.

We used Kallistra Figures for this game, they come in unit packs, with bases too-which happen to be the right size for DBA, so quite handy really. We used the DBN play sheet as it was easy to hand, with a few 'off the cuff' amendments. Spears counted as +1 in combat and can do columns, swords/blades count as normal combat and can't do columns, archers fire as muskets but -1 in combat, zombies and peasants fight as militia, undead (that's zombies and skeletons) don't suffer from 'shaken'-they wouldn't care, as they're already dead, the 'chaos/evil' army has -1 on cap dice to reflect the lack of discipline, and zombies once moved need 2 cap to stop them. They also wander randomly and are prone to chomping at the nearest unit-even if on their own side-once they had a kill. That's the usefulness of DBA/N rules-a few tweaks and you can game anything really.
So to the game. The Evil army had come over to trash and pillage the Human's village. That's pretty evil really. The Human's just wanted them to bog off. Both sides had to cause 4 element casualties to win, but we made it so that the Evil's had to kill 5-they wouldn't count it as a victory unless they had a bit more slaughter we reckoned.

So both sides lined up in a face off. , and off they went, with the Zombies on the right flank wandering off fairly quickly, looking for their dinner. The Humans called on theEvils to bog off or face a thrashing. The Evils merely snickered and gnashed their teeth.
Battle was quickly joined without much manoeuvre, in a straight forward hack and slash fest, with casualties on both sides. The spear skeleton column quickly pushed on through, whilst the archers backed off, firing into the orc swords. After seeing off the Human cavalry (the orc cavalry had a +1 being on wolves with big teeth), the orc cavalry and others rounded on the archers who had become detached from any support. And much slaughter and breaking of bows was had. The skeleton column carried on through the Humans line, finding an opportunity to mix it with the Chief, who proved adept at fending them off three times! To the right, the zombies munched their way through the local peasants, then turned on some spears, slowly chomping through them as well. For a bunch of dead folks, they eat an awful lot. Never, ever, invite them for tea and buns. After seeing them off, they went for the next nearest element..which sadly was a a unit of orcs. Needless to say, the Humans backed off.

A couple of moves later and it was all over bar the collecting of discarded weaponry. The Humans had been minced thoroughly. Their line was split, and the remaining Humans made their escape pledging revenge at a not too distant time in the future, leaving their village to be plundered by the Evils, who swiftly moved in, naturally taking the tavern and pastry shop first.

A good fun game was had, played over an hour and a half, on a TSS 2two foot board, a few trees, couple of hills and a few village buildings added for good measure.
